IVAN'S PLANS

These are construction plans for electric-powered, Radio Control model airplanes designed and built by Ivan Pettigrew. The plans are hand drawn with sufficient details for modelers with previous building experience, and include Ivan's written construction notes. The models are built mostly of balsa, using traditional construction methods.

In recent years, Chilliwack, British Columbia - near Canada's West Coast - has become the Pacific Northwest's "mecca" for electric model airplanes. Ivan was one of the prime movers for this trend, having designed his first electric model in the early nineties. Most of these models originally used racing car motors of the "05" class (equivalent to Speed 600 size.) These models are larger than most other model aircraft that use the same power packages, but they fly very well on low power because of their light construction and low wing loadings, and come close to scale-like flight appearance. Flight times of Ivan's prototypes vary from 7 to 15 minutes using Sanyo 1900mAh nicads.

The descriptions and specifications for most of the models were written before Lithium Polymer (LiPo) batteries came into widespread use. With LiPo batteries, the weight and wing loading of the models will be lower than the figures shown, and performance will be enhanced. Where a 9-cell pack was originally used, a 3S LiPo battery should be used, preferably of larger capacity. Flight times will be considerably longer, not only because of extra battery capacity, but also due to the weight savings realized.

Ordering
Ivan's plans are now available exclusively through the Flying Models Plans Service. The links below each description will open the FMPS listing for each plan in a new browser tab.

Due to rising postal charges, Ivan's plans are being shipped folded to both US and International addresses. The Flying Models web site only offers Priority Mail service at this time. However, they do ship using less expensive options when possible, and refund the difference to the customer. Please use their "Contact Us" form to discuss any questions you might have.

Flying Models also offers a second set of any plan for half price when when included in the original order, allowing you to cut up one set for templates, or build with a friend.

And finally, several of Ivan's models were originally drawn on multiple 24x36-inch sheets, requiring a bit of tape and care to assemble a working plan. Flying Models has now combined these component drawings onto larger single sheets for your convenience.

DE HAVILLAND DH86 EXPRESS
Four-engine passenger biplane

Scale: 1:7.9
Span: 98 in
Wing Area: 1,507 sq in
Length: 71 inches,
Weight: 114 oz with 6S 2800 LiPo
Wing Loading: 13.5 oz/sq ft*

Four Jamara 480 HS BB motors are used, wired series-parallel, driving 10x7 APC-E props through 4.1:1 ratio gearboxes. Static Thrust is 76 ounces at 6,200 RPM drawing 26 amps from the battery. (13 amps each motor.) The wings have a very high aspect ratio. Efficiency comes from using the thin Selig 3021 airfoil, modified towards the tips, but as in sailplanes, it makes for a challenge in accurate construction. Removable outer wing panels are optional, but demand good workmanship because of the thin airfoil used. Likewise, the undercarriage is a tight fit in the fairings, but they add to the streamlining of the model. The torsion bar suspension used on the main gear gives very good operation on rough fields. Flight characteristics are excellent. A safe, easy to fly model. August 2008.

DRUINE TURBULENT
Popular French single seat homebuilt

Scale: 1:5
Span: 50.3 in
Wing Area: 406 sq in
Length: 40 in
Weight: 28.2 oz
Wing Loading: 10 oz/sq ft

Park 450 890kV motor, 10x7 APC-E prop, 3S 1600mAh LiPo. The simple design of this popular homebuilt lends itself well to an easy-building model, making it a good choice for the first time plans builder. It is very stable with generous dihedral, and a great aileron trainer. The thin airfoil and light wing loading give a slow flat glide, and an easy transition to flare and a soft touchdown. It is also quite aerobatic. A Park 400 motor is quite adequate for anything but aggressive aerobatics. The Park 450 takes it pretty well vertical. Two earlier Turbulent designs were periodically flown on floats, proving the design to be very suitable for water flying. August 2016
